Winter has begun.

With only a few days to go before this year, the bears on the bear mound are starting to enter the winter spree. This year, perhaps because the temperature dropped sharply, as soon as the rice straw from the nest material was put in the room, the winter weight switch was turned on, and the next day, the breathing frequency was also 2 ~ 3 times per minute, and the breeding staff was also a little surprised. It's time to wake up

In March, Enlightenment Day is approaching. Around the end of February this year, perhaps because of the continued high temperatures, Mitt (6 years old) and Moko (12 years old) started to fidget, and they started to get up and move around a lot, so we decided to start feeding the two heads from March 1. ← photo is a bear pellet (bait), and since I haven't eaten anything for about 3 months, I give it after softening it thoroughly with hot water. ← photo shows the mitt at the moment of eating rice for the first time in about 3 months. I ate it in an instant without tasting it only by the young bear. Initially, I will give it about the amount of photos and gradually increase the amount. Other bears began to notice the smell of the bait, and some bears were waiting in front of the lattice door of the room. From now on, the number of bears to feed gradually increases, and the breeding staff gradually becomes busier these days. Breeding Staff

It's about time...

Even though there was no calendar or clock, the bears began to move. It seems that it is about time to wake up. There is also a bear that is already standing up, and when you look at the situation, it seems that it is healthy enough to feel the power of the eyes even though it has not eaten anything for about 3 months. The breeding staff is also relieved. Well, the story was taken in the middle of a winter retreat. In order to sleep with peace of mind, we put a compound panel on the iron barn of the barn, but rice straw is sticking out from the gap. If you look next to you, there is no such thing. Apparently, the bear is filling the rice straw in the gap in the companel as if to prevent the gap wind. It was like painting concrete on a wall with the palm of your hand like a plasterer... I grinned just imagining it embedding it with those big forelimbs. The photo on the left is also dirty because the rice straw is dirty, so I think it is coming out of the gap below, but it seems to prevent the gap wind. It is interesting that rice straw beds and crevice wind prevention are made in completely different ways depending on the individual. Bear Mountain will start operating on Saturday, April 26th!

How is it in the winter? Koji Hen?

Clinton followed by Koji-kun. I opened the ceiling vent to let in the light, so I woke up here as well. What's that? I look up as if to say, and check to see if the door that can be seen in the back of the photo opens, and I ask how it is in slow motion. Compared to Clinton, the rice straw bed is smaller and thinner. When you put a straight rice straw in the room, you can chew it or roll it with your front legs to soften it, creating your own comfortable place (bed). This varies from individual to individual, and some bears make it neatly sowing, while others sleep peacefully and cluttered, revealing their personality. Koji is... a meticulous person.

Well, if it was taking so long, I would have woken it up. Sorry Clinton. Brown bears are not hibernating, but winter bears, so they are sleeping with their faces. Female bears give birth during the winter months and can be active immediately if something happens. Even if you find a bear burrow in the mountains in the winter, please leave it alone.

Prayer time! ?

We are praying under a cold sky with a temperature of -10 degrees Celsius. As a joke, we are measuring the sleeping breaths of brown bears. There is a ventilation hole on the roof of the animal enclosure, from which you can check on the breathing of the brown bears during the winter. Because it slows down metabolism, breathing rate also decreases. They only breathe about 2-3 times per minute. Check by holding one side of the tube visible at T time with your hand and holding the other side to your ear. Whether it's a sunny day or a blizzard, this is an essential and important task. Bear Mountain is the only place in the world where animals hibernate in groups during the winter in captivity. This year is our 8th winter.
