On August 31, 2026, a 24-year-old male Ezo brown bear, Moko, passed away. Since around 2019, he has frequently been suffering from lameness due to arthropathy and spondylosis, and we have been taking time off from work and taking medication to monitor his progress. During the winter of 2025, I spent a lot of time fiddling with things and went to sleep. Since March 2026, he has been unable to stand up, and after treatment and treatment for bedsores, he was able to stand up on March 25th and gradually recovered.In May, he was released in a sub-paddock, and from July, in consultation with a veterinarian, he was able to undergo rehabilitation in a zoo. At the park, Moko played with her beloved Mitt, ate delicious food such as watermelon, and followed Moko's pace and will. On August 2nd, due to a fight with another individual, he became unable to stand and became bedridden again. We continued to treat him by placing mats to prevent pressure ulcers and changing his medication, but his hind legs became almost completely paralyzed, and the pressure ulcers progressed rapidly, including necrosis of the muscle tissue. Even if we continue with the treatment, there is no hope that Moko will recover, and Moko will continue to suffer, and all the staff members discussed that Moko will not be able to live like Moko, and we have made the difficult decision to euthanize Moko. An autopsy was performed immediately after the procedure, and severe spondylosis was confirmed. He was a gluttonous and kind bear who had a big presence and got along well with his good friends Mitt and the late Ataro, and listened carefully to what the staff had to say. Notice: A 25-year-old male Ezo brown bear, Hinata, has passed away. They have been released since the opening on April 25th, and although they were less active than usual due to their advanced age, they remained calm. On May 10th, I had been sleeping and resting for a long time since the morning, so my appetite had decreased a little, so I stopped exhibiting from the 11th and let myself rest. From the 11th to the 13th, he didn't have much of an appetite, and although he was able to move around on his own, he moved slowly from beginning to end. Since the morning of the 14th, the patient had been lying down, not moving, and unresponsive to stimulation, and although he stood up once, he immediately fell back down, and around 3:10 pm, it was confirmed that he had stopped breathing. As a result of the autopsy, the cause of death was presumed to be a large amount of ascites due to a hole in the bladder, difficulty in breathing due to ascites compressing the diaphragm and lungs, and heart failure due to reabsorption of a large amount of toxins and potassium from ascites (urine).
